Keywords:
Higher Education, reform, expansionAbstract
This article aims to perform a critical historical-documentary analysis of higher education in Brazil from the imperial period to the Military Coup in the context of the University Reform of 1968, with the implementation of Decree Law 5540/1968. The argument put forward is that the history of higher education in Brazil can not be investigated without considering its relation with Brazilian socio-historical development and that this history is bound by elitism and exclusion. The analysis also seeks to highlight the fact that the capitalist project, dependent-associated with the international hegemonic centers, has influenced higher education in Brazil, especially during the military regime considering the expansion of the number of places.
